Ways to use AI and avoid misuse

What is your policy on AI?

AI is for clarification, not creation.

AI is a useful tool. It can:

  • Explain concepts

  • Clarify instructions

  • Check grammar and spelling

  • Provide a tone check

  • Refine for accessibility

  • Create ordered steps of a task

  • Turn notes or transcripts into a readable summary

These are useful tasks that AI can perform more efficiently than people, and, so long as they are not misused or misrepresented as someone’s personal effort or ability, are not ethical quandaries.

For tasks where the purpose of the end product is simply to inform, AI can help refine, clarify, and make it accessible.

For tasks where the purpose of the end product is for the author to demonstrate mastery of a concept or skill, using AI to produce content is unethical. The person has not demonstrated personal mastery but is claiming credit.

So my thought process is that AI can be used appropriately or misused. I will always endeavor to use it appropriately as a tool.

How does Quirk Ed use AI?

The Quirk Ed website uses the AI tools within the website builder for tasks such as SEO or accessibility. Quirk Ed learning materials will utilize AI for tasks such as checking grammar, increasing clarity, turning notes and transcripts into useful summaries or formatted outlines for records keeping, etc.

For images, I use what I create myself, or copyright free or fair use images.

Presently, my copyright free or fair use images come from Pixabay, Wikimedia Commons, and the in-app libraries of Apple Pages and Cricut. I am only as good as the labeling that creators provide to these databases and libraries. If you find AI generated art on my website, please let me know so I can remove it.

Text: Good Idea: Using AI to Explain concepts, Clarify instructions, Check grammar and spelling, Provide a tone check, Refine for accessibility, Create ordered steps of a task, and Turn notes or transcripts into an easy-to-read summary

Bad Idea: Using AI to Create art, Create written content, Misrepresent your abilities, Use without citation (cite if you use AI as a tool in assignments and how), Plagiarism (using AI and claiming it as your own work for an assignment is considered a form of cheating and schools can discipline or expel students for it)
