FAQ
What is a Microschool?
Microschools are small, supportive school communities led by caring educators who make learning personal.
Inviting school spaces where kids develop a love for learning
Inspiring educators who guide and motivate each student
Learning that fits each child’s needs and strengths
A welcoming community where kids feel connected
Is a microschool the right fit for my learner?
Microschools take a flexible and individualized approach to learning and are therefore a good fit for many learners. To find out whether Quirk Ed is right for you, take the quiz here
Where are you located?
We are located in Westlake Village, CA
Exact location TBD
Does my family have to live in that town or school district to attend?
No. We welcome learners from anywhere in California.
Do you take learners outside of California?
Not at this time. It is possible we will in the future. States vary on what is required of a microschool and we would need to ensure we can meet all the requirements of a state before enrolling an out of state learner.
What ages/grades do you serve?
We serve learners ages 13-18 or middle school and high school.
Quirk Ed focuses on diverse, neurodivergent, and queer teens. Isn’t that an odd mix? What do they have in common?
Diverse is a simplified way of saying “anyone who could be marginalized by the current administration of our country.” This is a staggering number of populations: POC, ND, LGBTQIA, women (especially women who do not fit traditional gender roles), disabled (including invisible disabilities), etc.
The more time I spend in spaces for parents of neurodivergent teens and parents of queer teens, the more overlap I see. Not all neurodivergent teens are queer. Not all queer teens are neurodivergent. But many teens are both. The groups have a lot in common in terms of not fitting traditional molds, experiencing a lack of belonging, and more.
Quirk Ed was created for learners who march to the beat of their own drummer, regardless of the music.
What hours are you open?
Live virtual days: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:00 am to 1:00 pm
Small group body doubling by arrangement on Mondays and Fridays
Learner meetings by arrangement
Community (in person) Wednesdays from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm for learners who are local to Westlake Village, CA
Do you have a full time option?
No. The complexity of meeting varying learner needs does not lend itself to a full-time schedule. I cannot be everything to everyone all at once. We have dedicated time to come together, and dedicated time to work independently. Learners are free to go at a pace that works for them, and to set their schedule accordingly. This allows for a better school/life balance. It also allows for a myriad of circumstances that would make full time attendance problematic. Chronic health problems, jobs, travel, etc.
Can you really do school in such a short time?
Yes. A shocking amount of the school day is NOT active learning time. See here for more information. We eliminate that wasted time and allow learners to create a schedule that not only fits their needs but is efficient and effective. Learners will be doing core subjects independently with guidance. Body doubling or study hall type sessions are available by arrangement. Peer tutoring is also an option.
Is Quirk Ed accredited?
Quirk Ed is going through the accreditation process with WASC, the premier accreditation board in the US. Aspects of the process cannot be initiated until the second semester of operation.
Will my learner get a high school diploma?
If your learner graduates after Quirk Ed is accredited through WASC, yes.
If your learner is due to graduate before the accreditation process is completed, your learner would still get a Quirk Ed issued diploma. However, universities, trade programs, and employers differ in their acceptance or rejection of diplomas from unaccredited high schools. A high school must be accredited for completion of the FAFSA. If your learner is planning to attend university immediately after high school, and before the accreditation process is complete, they will need to pass the HiSet or GED exam for a high school equivalency certificate.
