Reading Instruction

What is a multi-sensory method for teaching reading and how will it benefit my learner?

A multi-sensory method means that we are doing more than just using visual or auditory methods. We are engaging the learner’s sense of touch, and linking touch, vision, and auditory together. This promotes a deeper connection with the materials and a deeper understanding of phonics.

Why are the sessions scheduled the way they are? Why virtual?

Learners at this stage of development typically have short attention spans. Longer sessions would not necessarily result in an increased amount of meaningful learning. Short sessions close together are usually the best way for learners to retain information. The sessions are virtual because most families would find it very inconvenient to drive somewhere for such a short lesson multiple times per week.

Will you be teaching penmanship?

The fine motor skills necessary for writing do not always develop at the same time as the cognitive skills for reading. Teaching penmanship will depend on skill with the pre-writing stencils and learner interest. If your learner is ready, I can create custom penmanship pages (up to 3 per week at no extra cost) and send them to you via printable PDF, to be used during upcoming sessions. Custom penmanship is more personally meaningful than traditional worksheets with repetition of letters. Learners are more motivated, and find it more engaging.

Do I need to participate in sessions?

This varies from learner to learner. Some do best with a caregiver alongside, some do best with a caregiver nearby if needed, and some do best solo, in a distractionfree environment. I am open to whatever set up works for your learner. I do ask that you ensure learner is successfully logged in, on time, for each session.

Is there homework?

I do not require homework. If you learner is motivated and finds it enjoyable, I am happy to provide suggestions, including but not limited to reading instruction. I can also make custom learning materials for a fee. I highly recommend continuing to read with your learner when you can, for the bonding and memory making.

Executive Function Coaching

How is Executive Function Coaching different from tutoring?

Tutoring is typically limited to a single subject the tutor excels at. EF coaching focus on soft skills that can be applied to all subjects, as well as daily life. The purpose is also different. Typically, tutoring focuses on imparting information in order to bring a student’s quality of work up to a specific standard. The learner may or may not care about the subject itself. The subject, and desired grade, may simply be requirements of high school graduation and the information never utilized again. EF Coaching focuses on building confidence and teaching skills that the learner can use, adapt, and apply to a variety of situations. Coaching supports the whole person.

Why are the sessions virtual?

Being virtual allows me to meet more of your learner’s needs without wasting time and energy driving to homes. It is meant to be more convenient for everyone. For a learner who struggles with motivation, hopping on zoom is often a more manageable task than leaving the home for an appointment. This is especially important on rough days. You know those days when you just want to stay in bed? With virtual appointments, learners can do that and still be present and benefit from the session. Pajamas and grumpy attitude welcome here!

It is summer. Can we begin Executive Function Coaching now? Will my learner get anything out of it?

Yes! Summer is a great time to teach EF skills. I recommend using a project your learner finds meaningful. This could be anything from cleaning out and redecorating a room, to creating a piece of art, to learning to bake. Your learner will have more freedom in selecting a goal to work towards, which means your learner will be more engaged. EF skills are applicable to a wide variety of circumstances. They are not just about academic success.

I’ve heard a lack of EF skills goes along with ADHD or other diagnoses. My learner doesn’t not have neurodivergence. Or my learner is suspected to be neurodivergent but does not have a diagnosis yet. Can I still register my learner for EF coaching?

Absolutely. A diagnosis is not required to register or receive services. ADHD is one cause of executive function struggles but is not the only cause. Quirk Ed welcomes neurodivergent and neurotipcal learners.

Caregiver Support

Who is caregiver support for?

Anyone raising a child. Parents, grandparents or other relatives with custody whether temporary or permanent, guardians, etc.

Why is Caregiver support not a substitute for therapy?

Individual therapy is about helping you become the best version of yourself. With a therapist’s help you can explore and heal from trauma, gain coping mechanisms, end ineffective or undesirable behavior patterns, etc. It is a long term commitment to a journey of growth. Individual therapy is a wonderful tool with many advantages.

Caregiver support has a different focus and goal than therapy. It is about increasing the peace in your daily life, improving interactions with your learner, learning tricks to making your home life run more smoothly, and providing a safe space for venting. Caregivers often feel like no one notices or appreciates all the hard work they do. Feeling heard can have dramatic benefits.
